Cabinet Refacing Costs and Benefits
One of the first questions that must be asked when considering any type of home improvement project is, "what is this going to cost?" While the costs of cabinet refacing are significantly lower than the expense of total cabinet replacement, it's still important to consider all of the factors going into the price.
DIY Versus a Cabinet Refacing Company
Depending on the scope of the project, the options selected, and the type of materials used, a cabinet refacing project typically runs somewhere between $500 and $5,000. Of course, one of the biggest factors in determining cabinet refacing costs is whether you will do the project yourself or hire a firm to do it for you. When cabinet refacing companies provide homeowners with an estimated cost, they generally do it by determining the price per unit, counting each cabinet drawer, door, and end panel, and adding in labor costs. The cost per unit can range anywhere from $100 to $250 or more, depending on the type of materials selected, while labor costs are determined by the company chosen. If you choose to complete the project yourself, labor costs are obviously eliminated from the equation, however, the price per unit model is still an effective way to determine the costs.
How Finish Options Affect Cabinet Refacing Costs
DIY versus hiring a professional isn't the only factor affecting the price of a project. The three most common refinishing options used are plastic laminate, wood, and rigid thermofoils (RTF). The RTF finish, which is well-known for its durable, wood-like appearance, is the least costly option for cabinet refacing. A plastic laminate finish costs a bit more than an RTF finish, and has reduced durability. Although plastic laminates offer a wider selection of color choices, they cannot be used on all styles of cabinet doors. A wood finish is the most expensive option; however, this choice also requires the lowest maintenance and offers the widest selection of colors. Homeowners must consider each option carefully before making a decision to ensure they choose the best finish for their home and their budget.
