Installing Countertops: Types and Materials

Installing the different countertop types and materials can be a do-it-yourself job. The most important thing to know is the countertop material you are working with and any necessary steps that should be taken to protect that type. Two easily installed countertop types are marble and granite.

Installing Marble Countertop Types

When installing marble, you should first measure the width and length of the countertop area. You must also decide at this step if you are going to need an area for the sink installation.

Once you have your measurements, you can order the marble from a home improvement store. Once the marble has arrived, place it snugly on the countertop area. However, do not use any glue. Then, use a belt sander to sand off any excess marble. Finally, make any adjustments to the countertop. Then, after all corners and sides fit perfectly, glue the countertop using a silicone caulk. Be sure not to use dark colored caulk, as it can change your marble's color.

Installing Granite Countertops

Installing granite countertop materials involves much of the same process as marble countertops. After measuring and ordering the countertops, lay ¾ inch thick plywood on top of the cabinet area. This is necessary to support the granite. Once the plywood is attached with screws to the cabinet, it is time to install the granite countertop. Create a template using heavy paper to measure the granite countertops. Use a circular saw to cut the granite when necessary. Join the granite seems, and then use silicone around the cabinet perimeters to finish installing the granite.

Installing countertop types can be easy to do. Take your time and do a little research and map out a plan of action.
