Countertop Installation - DIY or Not?
Countertop installation does not always need to be done by a professional. However, granite or other stone and tile are more difficult.
The Must-Knows of Countertop Installation
Before anything else, the cabinets need to be checked to see what, if any, prep work needs to be done. The cabinets must be level, especially for stone as they have no give. Another issue is that the cabinets must not be out of square. A box shape will have the same measurement from corner to corner. For L-shaped counters, use the simple rule of square: 3-4-5 or 6-8-10, etc. That means if you make an L-shape three inches long and four inches high, the square measurement from the corners is five inches across. If there are any high spots in the floor, the outside corners can be raised with shims to adjust.
For laminate tops, screw, using a drill, through the corner braces in the top corners of the cabinets. It is advisable to finish tightening the screws by hand. Tile countertop installation is more involved. It is not for the faint of heart but it can be accomplished by a novice, but it is advisable to research the project thoroughly and analyzing the skills needed before attempting. The prep work for the existing cabinets is the same. After all the cabinets are level and square and there are no high spots, cut plywood to fit over the space and screw it to the cabinets. If two pieces are used, they will also need to be screwed together.
Then, make a cardboard template. Lay out the tiles using tile spacers. Tape the seams of the tiles to prevent them from moving. Set the template on the tiles and tape it down. Trace along the template and number the tiles using a grease pencil.
Remove the tape and cut the tiles. Be sure to wear safety goggles. Tile cutters can be rented. Using tile adhesive, install the tiles. Install the undermount sink following manufacturer's directions. Grout the tile.
Most dealers and retailers of granite or stone countertops include installation in the cost. These types of countertop installation are best left to the professionals.
