Materials for Kitchen Cabinet Styles

We all know that most kitchen cabinets are made of some type of wood. However, did you know that there are different types of wood that are better for some cabinet styles than others? And did you know that cabinets can be made of material other than wood, such as melamine (a plastic like material) aluminum or steel. Here are some styles that work best with these materials.

Materials best suited for contemporary or modern style kitchen cabinets

Modern or contemporary cabinets are usually very minimal in design. They rarely have any ornamental decorations and sometimes, don't even have knobs or pulls. These cabinets can be made of wood or wood products like particle board or hardboard, but the best material for this style of kitchen cabinets might be steel. Steel duplicates the clean lines of the modern style, and can really bring out the best features of your new kitchen. A disadvantage of metal cabinets is that if they are not taken care of they may rust. Just be sure to find out about how to clean and maintain them, and they should last for quite sometime.

Melamine offers some of the same advantages of metal, clean lines, minimalist appearance, but can be manufactured in many different colors. It is also a plastic-like material which eliminates the rust problem.

Materials best suited for traditional kitchen cabinet styles

Most traditional style kitchen cabinets are made of hardwood or hardboard (pieces of wood pressed together and glued with a natural adhesive). This is the material best suited for traditional style cabinets. Many of this style of cabinet have ornate woodwork or inlays, which is not very easily done on particle board or metal. Though the cost of hardwood or hardboard cabinets is higher, the price is worth it if you are trying to duplicate a particular theme.
