How concrete countertops are made

More and more people are choosing to use concrete in their homes and one place in particular is the kitchen. Concrete countertops are becoming more popular because of the ability to mold it to any area you desire. Let's take a look at how concrete countertops are made. The way that a given concrete countertop is made will depend on the contractor, but there are a few basic things that are universal. A cast can be used if the contractor wants to do most of the work at his shop before bringing it out to the job site. Or some contractors will choose to build the whole thing wherever it is going to be installed, this can give greater precision and accuracy when installing the countertop.

Once the countertop has been constructed the builder will take and grind down the top with a series of diamond polishing stones. This gives durability and beauty to the product. Then the concrete countertop will need to be sealed. After two coats have been applied it usually takes about a week to fully set up. To maintain the quality, a water based wax should be reapplied every 9-12 months.

What is in a concrete countertop

When you say "Concrete Countertop" an image of a slab of sidewalk on your counter probably comes to mind. While there is concrete in the mix, other materials are also used to supplement the concrete. What is in a concrete countertop is very integral to how stable the finished product will be. In most cases you will find things such as fiber reinforcement, structural steel, wire mesh, fiberglass and acrylic. Adding these materials keeps the finished product relatively lightweight.
